We think that the most efficient and effective way to deliver lasting impact is to ask the local community to help. We want to help the local people discover a local solution to a local problem and see it delivered by the local community. They have embraced this concept wholeheartedly! The Mango Tree currently works in 116 villages in Tanzania and Kenya and has 251 village volunteers to help us focus on the orphans with the greatest needs and reduce overheads in the process. We incur virtually no costs at all for our administrative activities in the UK. The impact of its work is centred on more than 13,700 orphans (as of January 2013).
The Mango Tree is truly a community-based organisation, and last year (2012) it was able to provide effective support to its orphans in Kenya and Tanzania. Over 13,600 orphans received care and were provided with medical help, and given emotional support.
530 Pre-school orphans
152 Nursery school orphans
8373 Primary school orphans
3444 Secondary school orphans
214 Vocational training orphans
291 College and university orphans
And as well as this, close to a 1000 orphans are now eligible for vocational training. The Mango Tree met countless other calls on our resource. Thousands of mosquito nets to reduce the incidence of malaria, desks and text books for the schools, wind up torches , shelter, food, medical operations for fistula and clubbed feet, HIV prevention and testing and counselling.
All this was delivered through only 51 staff.
